GAH! I just don’t like the 1995 BBC version! I know I’m supposed to. That’s the version according to many fans. But I can’t like it, no matter how hard I try! I get that the 2005 version messes with characterization a little, but I’d much rather a movie alter or take away scenes than add stuff! There’s stuff in the 1995 version that never happened in the book, and it drives me nuts every single time.
Plus, I just can’t stand how much Lizzy and Darcy are portrayed as these sex symbols in it! Yes, I get Colin Firth is pretty sexy in it. But I feel like it’s so forced! In my mind, when I read the book, Darcy and Elizabeth aren’t super sexy or anything. They’re very vulnerable characters, and though there’s sexual tension between them, it’s not to the point that the reader sits there like, “OMG, Darcy is so hot!” Darcy’s kind of a dick! He’s just a normal guy - he doesn’t have a clue about how to act around women. And Elizabeth is a normal girl - she doesn’t have any idea how to tell if a man likes her.
I just feel in the 2005 version, it’s easy to view them as normal people. Elizabeth doesn’t say, “I’m bad at the piano” and then go on to impress. She says she’s not that great, and you know what - she’s not. It just feels so much more honest to me.
